Cognitive technology
With today's technology replacing almost everything with its electronic counterpart, cognitive technology is indeed one definite pioneer initiative in the modern world. In science "cognition" is a mental process that involves attention, memory, understanding, learning, reasoning and decision making. So cognitive technology is an application that inculcate these activities in electronic devices and tools for extended performance in a range of products. Experts say that many times, distributed cognition entails that the human and technology are performing tasks that are beyond the capacity of the other. Thus, a vital cooperation is formed, whereby each contributes specific and unique capabilities. This means that it is not a matter of mere convenience and efficiency, but that such distributed cognition with cognitive technology is necessary.
Now the news is that IPsoft is ready to disrupt the BPO industry with its cognitive technology. "By Christmas you will see it in action in one of the largest media companies", founder and chief executive officer Chetan Dube told ET in an exclusive interview. IPsoft's cognitive technology assimilates information just like the human brain and processes it with reliability of computers to solve problems, he said.
Though this technology is a welcoming one it does have its own profound impact on human race!

Smartphone wave
When it comes to smartphones, the world remembers two giants - Apple and Samsung. But analysts say that buyers are more willing to look at alternatives because the difference among smartphones are less pronounced these days. Some of the companies that are trying to make a comeback in smartphone market are the familiar names - Sony, Nokia and HTC. Individually, none of these companies pose a threat to the top two. However, collectively the three companies have showed an excellent growth over the past years. The proportion of phones running Google's Android system keeps rising and technical specifications are converging.Chinese smartphone makers have an edge and this is an increasingly important selling point. What happens in China is also important because success there help smaller companies develop the strength to move into emerging markets around the globe. While most smartphones are made in China, Chinese handset makers have so far struggled to export phones under their own brand. So if Samsung and Apple does not maintain a strong position in China, other players, mostly Chinese players, will do that instead, and then use that as a springboard to attack them in other markets. However the smartphone market is still a rising tide waiting to lift many other smartphone vendors across the globe.

Fingerpoint-enabled Touchscreen
Have you ever wondered of a touchscreen display identifying finger prints? If so, wait for some more time as it is almost closer to reality. In a way it would redefine online security and revolutionize human and computer interaction. To make the current touch screens identify fingerprints, it is essential that a supplement sensor needs to be accommodated. Researchers Christian Holz and fellow researcher Patrick Baudisch have modeled a prototype that uses a glass screen, made of millions of 3 millimetre-long optical fibres that are bunched together vertically. From an image projector that is mounted below the glass, each fibre is able to pipe out visible light rays. Meanwhile, from a source adjacent to the projector, an infrared light bounces off the fingerprints and back down to an infrared camera.
Wait and watch for this about-to-come new technology!

Dexetra's App - FRIDAY
Dexetra is a privately owned start-up organization developing innovative products targeted at the mobile market. They had built an application Iris that mimicked the iphone's voice recognition software Siri. Since then, the three-year-old company, founded by a group of software engineers, has gone to build more applications that personalize data to suit a user's need. Bangalore-based Dexetra uses artificial intelligence to build apps. With nearly four million downloads on the Android platform so far, Iris was the product that built the team's reputation.
Dexetra team is now betting on their new product FRIDAY- a mobile application that almost functions as a second brain. The app captures events happening around the user, the people he talks to, places he visits, images he captures, and the songs he listens to. Using this raw data, it then anticipates the user's mood and initiates actions such as playing the right song. The app has received over two lakh downloads. Friday is not just a backup service, on the contrary, it collates all the information and presents you with a digitized form of memory which is searchable or may be you can consider it your best friend !

Apple iOS 7 unveiled
Apple recently unveiled its latest mobile operating system for iPhones and iPads called iOS 7. It comes with a completely redesigned interface with new colors, icons and much more. Here are some of the key features of this new mobile OS.
- Apple is experimenting with an easier way to move back a screen in apps - a swipe up from any screen including the lock screen instead of tapping a "back" button.
- Browsing is now bigger and better with Safari. Buttons and bars like the unified smart search field stays hidden (until a sharper scroll reveals them) thus allowing optimal use of the available viewing area. You can go back and forward a page and work seamlessly, making for a much improved browsing experience.
- The iCloud keychain stores and encrypts your passwords and credit card information.
- Passbook app, which stores virtual coupons and tickets, has been drastically improved and users can add cards by scanning a QR code.
- Multi tasking has always been a smart way to switch between apps. Now it's even smarter - you can control which apps you want to run in the background using the settings menu. So the next time, you tend to check your social app at 9:00 a.m everyday, your feed will be ready and waiting for you.
- iOS 7 has introduced smart groupings of photos and videos based on time and place. Tap years and all your shots fill the screen. With iCloud, you can share your favorite moments with your favorite people by creating a shared photo stream. They can post photos, videos, and comments to your stream, and it all appears in everyone's iOS devices -automatically.
These are just a few highlights of the iOS 7, but there's so much more to see and do in the new mobile OS. Stay tuned for plenty more news on iOS 7 before it sees its release date.

SaaS - Software as a Service
SaaS is a software delivery method that provides access to software and its function remotely as a web-based service. Here the customers can have access to software that otherwise had to be purchased. SaaS allows organizations to access business functionality at a cost typically less than paying for licensed applications since SaaS pricing is based on a monthly fee. Also, because the software is remotely hosted, users don't need to invest in additional hardware. It also removes the overhead installation, set-up and maintenance costs. Google Apps, Microsoft 365 and Amazon web services are already providing this SaaS services.

A dream against all odds ( Master chef US)
More recently did I happen to watch the MASTERCHEF US show on star network.Excellent one... I should say. The first few shows made me think that the three judges, Gordan Ramsay, Graham Elliot, Joe Bastianich were very harsh in their comments but later I understood that the perfection they had expected is absolutely required for a show like this. The chefs chosen are no ordinary people and their strict attitude absolutely has brought out the best of the contestants. The show actually exhibits the flavours of hard work, dedication, commitment, spirit and their passion towards cooking. The contestants have put their heart and soul into this. They were made to cook under pressure but still they managed to give delicious dishes.
The final two contestants who competed for the Master chef title were Josh and Christine. I should say that these two were really stunning. Josh was a controversial person who was previously eliminated but got a re-entry in the wild card round. He was not among the top contestants but his determination got him to the top level. People thought that he could not give a scoring dish. The confidence in him was astounding and made him top the charts. He was the runner-up in this competition.
My all-time admiration in this Master chef is Christine. She was the title winner of this master chef. She is blind - would you all believe this? She didn't even know how her dish looked like when she presented before the judges. Her tearful words " I am a living proof that dreams come true against all odds" is absolutely true. There was one particular round in which the contestants were supposed to look and taste a dish and prepare the same. When all others could do both, Christine was the only person who identified the individual flavours just by tasting it and took the aid of others to explain how the dish looked like. To everyone's surprise, she replicated the dish with the exact flavours and it was a visual retreat. She absolutely deserves to be on the top. What a positive attitude and a winning spirit!

Innovations
Innovation isn't a goal as we all think; its everything that gets you there! It inculcates a whole lot of ideas loaded up with belly-up failures. Innovations never have an end because what we want and what we need keeps changing. The failure of the past might be a success of the present but the success of the present can be a failure of the future. (The incandescent light was a 19th-century failure and a 20th- century success. Now it’s a failure again, edged out by new technologies, like LEDs, that were, themselves, failures for many years.). Without changes there is no innovation, creativity or improvement. Though failures and mysteries might make innovations look messy, the real success of these innovations do make us feel top of the world. It is an awesome experience !

Google's self-driving cars
The mysterious Google X labs are working on an unimaginable technology - the Self-driving cars. Google's self-driving cars are programmed to move at speeds specified in their mapped data and maintain distance from other vehicles through sensors. They can sense their surroundings, pedestrians and even stoplights but the most stunning feature is that of a 360 degree visibility around (unlike human). They follow rules perfectly and change lanes with extreme caution. With the google cars already on the US roads for test drive, lets hope that it hits the market at the earliest!

Cloud storage services allows customer access to applications without installation and to access their files from any computer with internet. Although there are many cloud storage services available, no single choice stands the best. Each has its own advantages and hence it is the choice of the users to explore the service that suits them the best. Just cloud, Otixo, Dropbox, Amazon Cloud drive, my PCbackup, Zip cloud, Microsoft skydrive, Google drive, Mozy, iCloud, Box, SOS, iCylan app, crash plan are some of the cloud services worth mentioning. The most important question about cloud is that is it secured? Well, the question is here to stay and all giants are working on it...

watch out for iWatch
Big companies like Microsoft and Sony had unsuccessful attempts at the smart watch market. It's Apple's turn now. Investors and fans are latching on to hopes that the tech giant's next big thing will be iWatch. The Apple iWatch could take “hands free” to a new level of convenience. The iWatch is assumed to be linked to an iPhone or an iPad with Bluetooth technology, enabling a user to be alerted to incoming calls, texts, emails and information in a nonchalant, unobtrusive manner. A user could be alerted to important communication through vibration and casually check the screen, for example. Additional alerts could include caller ID, calendar, weather, stock prices, and vital signs. Presumably, users could customize the iWatch to display or alert on a limited number of items they care most about, because the iPhone or iPad would be close by with the full offering. According to reports, we may see an iWatch this year.
Grow your dendrites for long-term memory
How many of us know that learning is closely connected to the
dendrites in our brain? Let us see what these dendrites are. Like any other
cells in our body, we have cells in our brain too. These brain cells are called
neurons. Dendrites are projections of neurons which grow when we learn, listen,
write, and practice something.
We grow dendrites for the things we practice. For example, if
we watch something we grow dendrites for watching. If we write then we grow dendrites
for writing and so on. All are born naturally skilled - it is only we who have
to help these dendrites grow to master a particular skill. Dendrites grow naturally
and nobody can grow them for you. Hence you have to develop the habit of learning
something – writing, dancing, reading to grow dendrites.
In order to have a kid start where they are, ask them to think about it, or say what they know. This activates the dendrites in the area of the brain related to that topic. It gears up the neurons and makes the dendrites ready to grow. Mistakes are also welcomed because we give an opportunity for these dendrites to understand what is wrong and help them to grow the right way avoiding these errors again.

Slow learners
Last week I happened to see a friend of mine who was in great distress. I struck a conversation with her only to know that she was worried about her kid. It is that her kid was a slow learner and the class teacher had recommended a counselling for him. I had a casual talk with the kid and the repartee way he talked made him sound smart. That stunned me.But then why was this kind of counselling suggested for him? Of course, such kids might be slow learners but definitely they do not possess learning deficiency. They simply might not do well in school or in a particular subject, but might have capabilities to do well outside a classroom. So the bottom line is that they too are perspicacious students and should not be ignored. A teacher might really have great challenge training these kids but a different approach would definitely bring in a great change.I fumbled to find out if there are ways to overwhelm this and discovered that complimenting such kids with incentives works out. I don't know how many of you will agree with me upon this kind of gratification but it do makes wonders in many cases. May be, another way to look out might be to adopt a different learning method that suits them the best. Every child is naturally born smart and it is the interest that we impart within that makes them what they are.

Mind maps
Here is something that is interesting that I would like to share - the mind maps.
Mind maps are methods of storing and organizing information using key words, which trigger associated ideas and encourage new thoughts. Mind maps are brain storming techniques and helps to summarize information from different complex research sources. It boosts up the thinking levels and present a structured information of your subject.
Now to make it simple
1.Just write down a central idea.
2.Think related ideas which would radiate from the center - what, why, where and so on.
3. Keep the words as simple as possible.
4. Make more branches from your main topic and extend the branches further.
5. Draw connections between ideas created.
6.Personalize your maps with different lines or colors which help you to recall better.
So what are u waiting for? Create your own mind maps - be it personal or professional!

Augmented Reality (AR)
Have you many a times
returned back your product just because they didn't suit your need. Now stop
worrying and there is a technology available for you to check if they are the
one for you - AR technology.
On the left, is the vacuous room and on the right is the same room with the product you want to try |
Augmented reality (AR) is a
live, direct or indirect video feed of a real object to display on a smart
phone. This is based on virtual reality concept which replaces the real world
with a simulated one. If you want to see a product in your environment, just click the "try on" button on Augment-connected eCommerce sites, and the Augment will open and overlay the "item" anywhere you point your smartphone or tablet camera. With the help of advanced
AR technology (e.g. adding computer vision and object recognition) the
information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive
and digitally manipulable. Artificial information about the environment and its
objects can be overlaid on the real world.
An interesting news is that APPLE has won a patent for an augmented reality system that can identify objects in a live stream and present information corresponding to the said objects through a computer generated information layer overlaid on top of the real-world image.

How to train your kids brain
A
frequent headache of today’s mother is all about making a child learn and
recall what they have learnt. Lot of research is going on to help the kids in
training their brain. Human brain has an astonishing power to process and
recall information. Well, human brain can be properly trained in many ways to
help kids in learning process.
Similar
to physical workout, the brain too needs workouts. A simple workout is that the
more we use our brain, the more we will be able to process and remember information.
Avoid the kids from having the same day-to-day routine as it results in memory
loss. It is important to make them look out for newer ideas or indulge them in innovative
activities. This can be anything like learning a new language, instrument, going
on for vacations, playing strategic games or solving new puzzles etc. Anything
that is new and amazing is a definite brain workout for kids.
Mnemonics
(associating ideas) is another training technique in which we convert complex
information into simpler versions so that kids can easily understand what they
learn. For example, the colors of the rainbow can be easily remembered by the
letters VIBGYOR meaning violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red.
For some kids, identifying color might be a difficult task. Relate red color
with an apple, blue with sky, yellow with a banana and so on. For grown-up
kids, complex information can be charted down in a hierarchical model or can be
visually drawn to make it simple.
Relating
the information learnt with the senses (seeing, smell, color, texture etc) will
also help the kids in gaining knowledge. For example if you are teaching a
child about an animal, show them the picture and if possible try to get them
colorful charts so that they can visualize the animal. When teaching them about
different fruits or vegetables allow them to see, touch or taste it. This will
enhance their retention capacity.
Try to rehearse the information the child has learnt
at regular intervals. This is a better method than cramming as it helps to
retain the information for a longer period. If the child has a poem to recite,
help them to learn it with actions and make them repeat it at regular intervals
for better output.
These brain training methods will definitely
motivate a child to get involved in what they learn. But most of all it is important
that we spend quality time with the kids in shaping their future.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S IV - An insight
Last week witnessed a mega launch of the Samsung galaxy S IV. Its features have left the audience spell bound. I have just shared some of the exceptional features that grabbed my attention.
First and the foremost is the smart scroll option that allows the user to control the screen with their eyes. Once the user takes his eyes off the screen, the video that the user has been viewing stops and restarts when he looks at it again. It has a special dual camera that can take simultaneous photos and videos using both rear and front camera and blend them together. "Air view" is another interesting feature that allows the user to hover with his fingers to preview the content of an email, image or video without actually opening it. The "air gesture" helps to scroll up or down the web page or accept a call with a wave of the hand. The S voice drive helps the driver in multitask activities. When the user is actually driving, it reads the incoming messages aloud, lets the user to dictate messages or use navigation features with his voice without taking his eyes off the road.
With all these new features, SAMSUNG has really posed a great threat to its rival, APPLE. Keeping fingers crossed, lets wait and watch what APPLE has in store to retaliate.

Bees - An unknown Truth
Are we all aware of this?
"If the bee became extinct, man would survive a few years beyond it", Einstein predicted...
Many studies have revealed that bees are considerably declining. The estimated causes are radiation, global warming, chemical pesticides, contaminated water etc...Bees may be a vexatious insect but they are the ones that contribute to 70% of pollination.
Pollination, as we all know, is essential for the life cycle of flowering plants. These flowering plants are the basis of food chain for many animals. If the number of bees reduce drastically then it would have a devastating effect on the plants as they rely solely on these bees for pollination. This would eventually result in the extinction of certain species of plants as a result of which the animal species that depend on these plants would also become extinct. This chain reaction will finally affect the human and would be disastrous.(Any imbalance in nature will affect human beings since it has a cascading effect)
Well, I am not here to discuss if this is really an Einstein prediction but this has been proved scientifically. At least let us all spread this word for some likely change.......

Let the child learn the way they want
Many parents are fed up of frequent
complaints about their child’s academic performance. They are worried about the
kid’s future. But just put a pause to those thoughts and think the child’s way. Each child learns in a different way.Why are they then forced to learn a standard learning technique?
Going by the real world statistics, there are three important learning styles - visual, audio and kinesthetic.
- Visual style involves seeing and reading. Visual learners prefer graphs, pictures and diagrams. They look for visual representations of information. Flashcards, diagrams and pictures will enhance visual learning. Visual learners benefit from taking notes, designing diagrams and drawing pictures to represent concepts.
- Audio style includes listening and speaking. These learners listen to the spoken word of others, of sounds and noises. An audio learner learns best by hearing sound clips, recordings and music. Listening to recordings of lectures, asking questions in class and reading aloud are ways by which audio learners can enhance their leaning.
- Kinesthetic style involves touching and doing. This includes a need to move and to have physical experience- touching, feeling, holding, doing and practical hands-on experiences. Incorporating activity into studying and learning enhances kinesthetic learning. Kinesthetic learners can take notes, ask questions and use role-play to improve their learning.

Reaction vs Response
Recently I came across an article which interestingly marked
a difference between a reaction and a response. This prompted me to explore
what actually these two are and what is the line that segregates them. To make
it simple, reactions are mostly destructive and are an emotional or physical
response while responses are made after a clear thought and are highly
appreciated.
Let us consider a scenario where your child breaks a brand
new watch of yours. What will be yours – reaction or response?
Reaction - Beat the child and scold him for the act.
Response- Explain the child about the price of that watch and
tell him how much you like it and how much you are disturbed by the act.
The former is an immediate reaction while the latter is a
positive approach. The next time the child happens to touch anything that is
precious, will you think he will try to break it? He would definitely think
of its value and your love for it.
Of course, it is very difficult to respond since we human are
tuned to react immediately. It is always better to cultivate this habit of response
rather than reaction and I am working on it too…..
