Augmented Reality (AR)

Have you many a times returned back your product just because they didn't suit your need. Now stop worrying and there is a technology available for you to check if they are the one for you - AR technology.

On the left, is the vacuous room and on the right is the same room with
the product you want to try

Augmented reality (AR) is a live, direct or indirect video feed of a real object to display on a smart phone. This is based on virtual reality concept which replaces the real world with a simulated one. If you want to see a product in your environment, just click the "try on" button on Augment-connected eCommerce sites, and the Augment will open and overlay the "item" anywhere you point your smartphone or tablet camera. With the help of advanced AR technology (e.g. adding computer vision and object recognition) the information about the surrounding real world of the user becomes interactive and digitally manipulable. Artificial information about the environment and its objects can be overlaid on the real world.

An interesting news is that APPLE has won a patent for an augmented reality system that can identify objects in a live stream and present information corresponding to the said objects through a computer generated information layer overlaid on top of the real-world image.

How to train your kids brain

A frequent headache of today’s mother is all about making a child learn and recall what they have learnt. Lot of research is going on to help the kids in training their brain. Human brain has an astonishing power to process and recall information. Well, human brain can be properly trained in many ways to help kids in learning process.

Similar to physical workout, the brain too needs workouts. A simple workout is that the more we use our brain, the more we will be able to process and remember information. Avoid the kids from having the same day-to-day routine as it results in memory loss. It is important to make them look out for newer ideas or indulge them in innovative activities. This can be anything like learning a new language, instrument, going on for vacations, playing strategic games or solving new puzzles etc. Anything that is new and amazing is a definite brain workout for kids.

Mnemonics (associating ideas) is another training technique in which we convert complex information into simpler versions so that kids can easily understand what they learn. For example, the colors of the rainbow can be easily remembered by the letters VIBGYOR meaning violet, indigo, blue, green, yellow, orange and red. For some kids, identifying color might be a difficult task. Relate red color with an apple, blue with sky, yellow with a banana and so on. For grown-up kids, complex information can be charted down in a hierarchical model or can be visually drawn to make it simple.

Relating the information learnt with the senses (seeing, smell, color, texture etc) will also help the kids in gaining knowledge. For example if you are teaching a child about an animal, show them the picture and if possible try to get them colorful charts so that they can visualize the animal. When teaching them about different fruits or vegetables allow them to see, touch or taste it. This will enhance their retention capacity.

Try to rehearse the information the child has learnt at regular intervals. This is a better method than cramming as it helps to retain the information for a longer period. If the child has a poem to recite, help them to learn it with actions and make them repeat it at regular intervals for better output.

These brain training methods will definitely motivate a child to get involved in what they learn. But most of all it is important that we spend quality time with the kids in shaping their future.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S IV - An insight

Last week witnessed a mega launch of the Samsung galaxy S IV. Its features have left the audience spell bound. I have just shared some of the exceptional features that grabbed my attention.

First and the foremost is the smart scroll option that allows the user to control the screen with their eyes. Once the user takes his eyes off the screen, the video that the user has been viewing stops and restarts when he looks at it again. It has a special dual camera that can take simultaneous photos and videos using both rear and front camera and blend them together. "Air view" is another interesting feature that allows the user to hover with his fingers to preview the content of an email, image or video without actually opening it. The "air gesture" helps to scroll up or down the web page or accept a call with a wave of the hand. The S voice drive helps the driver in multitask activities. When the user is actually driving, it reads the incoming messages aloud, lets the user to dictate messages or use navigation features with his voice without taking his eyes off the road.

With all these new features, SAMSUNG has really posed a great threat to its rival, APPLE. Keeping fingers crossed, lets wait and watch what APPLE has in store to retaliate.

Bees - An unknown Truth

Are we all aware of this?
"If the bee became extinct, man would survive a few years beyond it", Einstein predicted...
Many studies have revealed that bees are considerably declining. The estimated causes are radiation, global warming, chemical pesticides, contaminated water etc...Bees may be a vexatious insect but they are the ones that contribute to 70% of pollination.

Pollination, as we all know, is essential for the life cycle of flowering plants. These flowering plants are the basis of food chain for many animals. If the number of bees reduce drastically then it would have a devastating effect on the plants as they rely solely on these bees for pollination. This would eventually result in the extinction of certain species of plants as a result of which the animal species that depend on these plants would also become extinct. This chain reaction will finally affect the human and would be disastrous.(Any imbalance in nature will affect human beings since it has a cascading effect)

Well, I am not here to discuss if this is really an Einstein prediction but this has been proved scientifically. At least let us all spread this word for some likely change.......

Let the child learn the way they want

Many parents are fed up of frequent complaints about their child’s academic performance. They are worried about the kid’s future. But just put a pause to those thoughts and think the child’s way. Each child learns in a different way.Why are they then forced to learn a standard learning technique?
Going by the real world statistics, there are three important learning styles - visual, audio and kinesthetic.
  • Visual style involves seeing and reading. Visual learners prefer graphs, pictures and diagrams. They look for visual representations of information. Flashcards, diagrams and pictures will enhance visual learning. Visual learners benefit from taking notes, designing diagrams and drawing pictures to represent concepts.
  • Audio style includes listening and speaking. These learners listen to the spoken word of others, of sounds and noises. An audio learner learns best by hearing sound clips, recordings and music. Listening to recordings of lectures, asking questions in class and reading aloud are ways by which audio learners can enhance their leaning.
  • Kinesthetic style involves touching and doing. This includes a need to move and to have physical experience- touching, feeling, holding, doing and practical hands-on experiences. Incorporating activity into studying and learning enhances kinesthetic learning. Kinesthetic learners can take notes, ask questions and use role-play to improve their learning.
Many questionnaires are available online to identify the specific learning style of a child. Once the child is identified with a particular learning style, he/she must be encouraged on those lines to have excellent result. The schools should also incorporate these styles of learning in classroom. We, as parents, should understand the child and help them win over their learning hurdles!

Reaction vs Response

Recently I came across an article which interestingly marked a difference between a reaction and a response. This prompted me to explore what actually these two are and what is the line that segregates them. To make it simple, reactions are mostly destructive and are an emotional or physical response while responses are made after a clear thought and are highly appreciated.
Let us consider a scenario where your child breaks a brand new watch of yours. What will be yours – reaction or response?
Reaction - Beat the child and scold him for the act.
Response- Explain the child about the price of that watch and tell him how much you like it and how much you are disturbed by the act.
The former is an immediate reaction while the latter is a positive approach. The next time the child happens to touch anything that is precious, will you think he will try to break it? He would definitely think of its value and your love for it.
Of course, it is very difficult to respond since we human are tuned to react immediately. It is always better to cultivate this habit of response rather than reaction and I am  working on it too…..
